Choosing your job

What you MUST consider when choosing your first job

Looking for a job after University usually involves a great deal of time and effort. You have to get those applications just right to convince your potential employers that you are the best person for the job. If you are offered a job it is tempting to accept straight away, but don’t jump too soon! You will be spending the majority of your time in this role so you need to make sure it is the right fit for you. We have put together a list of What you MUST consider when choosing your first job:

Location

The good thing for you grads is that you are more flexible on where you can move to than the majority of the market! That in mind, you still need to seriously consider location before taking a job role. Think about the price of renting and make sure the salary offered will realistically cover your outgoings. Commuting time and effort can also be a massive stress to workers so make sure you know how long this will take and cost you. You don’t want to be sat in a traffic jam for 2 hours a day (unless perhaps it is your absolute dream job)!

Salary

Before applying you need to be realistic about salary – you want to be paid what your worth but you need to also understand that a graduate salary is a starting point whilst you get experience. Work out your monthly costs (rent, utilities, insurance, car / transport, socialising etc.) and make sure it is enough for you to live comfortably. Nothing will put you off a job quicker than running out of money 2 days after pay day! Employees today seek more than just a paycheck; they look for benefits that cater to their evolving needs. A proven method to enhance job satisfaction and motivation is by introducing flexible benefits. FlexGenius’s approach to tailored employee benefits is an excellent model for businesses aiming for this.

Company Culture

In your interview, ask about the company culture – e.g. “What form of training programme will be in place?”, “What is the current relationship between the team, do you ever have social events / company activities?”, “What are the typical working hours?” etc. You need to make sure this is an environment you will be happy working in – checking out their social media channels and website is a good indicator for this.

Tasks and Duties

Make sure the job description is crystal clear as you don’t want to take the job and find out your doing something completely different when you get there! Make sure you understand what your main duties will be, what sort of targets there are (if any) and who you will be reporting to.

Incentives

Still can’t choose a job role on the first 4 factors? Some companies offer incentives / benefits for staff taking a job with them! This may be financial bonuses / free gym and healthcare etc. Searchability is even offering a brand new Apple Watch for graduates placed into digital roles this Summer! So think about what perks could swing it for you!
