solutions

Be a solutions person as well as an ideas person.

Many people may think that offering great ideas at work are going to win them a promotion. They have a dream that they will go to a meeting offer this brilliant idea, the idea will save the company millions, they will be praised by their peers and management, and then someday be promoted to a lofty position. In reality, promotions from ideas aren’t that easy.

You must consider that offering your boss ideas gives your boss work to do. Instead of making their life easier you are adding to their lists of tasks they need to complete. Bosses are not going to give you a promotion if you are making them work harder. The better thing to do is for you to turn those ideas into solutions. Turning ideas into solutions shows that you are proactive. You don’t always need to ask your boss to make changes that you know will improve systems or processes. By making changes on your own, you are showing initiative and that you are passionate about your work. If you don’t have any new ideas yourself, you can mirror the behavior of top performers. You may notice methods they are using and implement them in your own work. Another good way to get your boss to notice you is by finding ways to better meet customer needs.

When your boss meets customer needs better or makes the company more money, your boss gets noticed. Your boss will be grateful and will also recognize you. Your boss may be then promoted and may then subsequently promote you.

This is good advice. The workplace is usually full of ideas people but is also usually bereft of people who can actually implement effectively those ideas.
